Inkjet support for Canon

All Canon cartridges

My cartridge is not recognised by the printer.
It is possible that a warning message appears that indicates the cartridge is empty or that a non-original cartridge is placed (this message can differ depending on the printer model). Simply click 'OK'. If the ink level indicated subsequently appears, do not take notice of it. The indicated status is not the status of the placed cartridge. Click the field and close the window. If the button blinks, click it for 5 seconds and printing will continue. If the button 'Continue' is blinking or if you cannot click anything on your screen, reset the printer: - Press the stop/reset, start (triangle) or resume (triangle/circle) button for 5 seconds. Printing will now continue. It is possible that the message stating your cartridge is empty will continue to appear. You can ignore this message.
The error report: 'cartridge is empty' appears.

My cartridge looks different from the original cartridge.
Due to patents of the printer manufacturer, it is possible a cartridge differs slightly from the original. However, this does not influence the print quality.
My cartridge does not fit the printer like the original cartridge.
Lift the cartridge slightly until you can hear it click into position. There will be some resistance, but you can keep applying light pressure.
There are no more prints after replacing the cartridge.
If there is a specific error report, you can solve the error based on the solutions provided in our technical database. Please check first if the seal has been removed from the cartridge. If the seal has been removed and there is no error report, you can execute a cleaning programme. You can find this programme under the heading 'printer contents' (header can differ depending on the printer). See the printer manual.
My print has a bad quality: white stripes/bad colour.
Ensure the cartridge is not empty, you printed to the maximum. If this is not the case, you can clean the cartridge once or multiple times using the printer's cleaning programme. You can find this programme under the heading 'printer maintenance' (header can differ depending on the printer). The cleaning programme can be executed multiple times.
My cartridge is leaking ink.
If the leak occurred during the placement of the cartridge, you can no longer use the cartridge. Clean the cartridge tray using a lint-free cloth and place a new cartridge. Did the leak occur during printing? Stop printing immediately. Remove the leaking cartridge, clean the tray with a lint-free cloth, dry the printer rollers and run 3 to 4 white sheets through the printer to absorb as much ink as possible.
I cannot print, but the cartridge still has sufficient ink.
Make sure that the cartridge has been used recently so the ink has not dried. If this is the case, you will have to place a new cartridge. Is this not the case? Remove the cartridge from the printer and clean the copper-coloured part with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
The print results differ from using an original cartridge.
The black colour can differ slightly (less deep) from the original. This is a result of the ink, but does not influence the quality.

The printer display reports: "E,1,6 Out of ink."
At the same time this message appears on the display, a pop-up will appear on your screen with the following text: 'support code 1688 – The following ink is empty black PG-540 or colour CL-541. Replace the cartridge and close the paper outlet. If printing is in progress and/or wish to continue printing, press the stop/reset button for at least 5 seconds while the ink cartridge is placed. Printing can be continued while the ink is almost out. The function for determining the remaining ink supply has been switched off. Replace the empty ink cartridge immediately after printing. The printing quality is not sufficient if you keep using the printer if the ink is almost out.' Hold the stop/reset button for 5-10 seconds. The pop-up with support code 1688 and the message E,1,6, on the display are gone and printing can continue. The indicator lights of black (B) and colour (C) keep blinking and the ink cartridges can be used to print until colour fading is visible on the printed pages as a sign that the ink cartridge is almost empty and needs to be replaced.

Reset the printer by pressing the stop/reset button for 5-10 seconds. If resetting does not help, clean the copper coloured part of the cartridge using a slightly damp, lint-free cloth. You can also use this to clean the contact point in the printer. Reset your printer again after cleaning.

I cannot remove the messages and thus am unable to print.
If you cannot remove the message by clicking the button for 5 seconds, it is possible you have the 'old' cartridge versions. These cartridge do not function without an adaptor. The new cartridge version has a chip and, as such, does not need an adaptor.

Why does my cartridge not light up like an original cartridge?
This has been patented by the manufacturer to prevent this feature from being used for alternative cartridges. This means there is no light when the new cartridge is placed; this however does not influence the print quality.

This cartridge has a green part on the bottom which the OEM cartridge does not have.
This green part is required for patent reasons. However this not reflects the printing quality. Focus on installation: cartridge has to be inserted an kept in place then the green part has to be pushed down to fix it.
Cartridge is not fixed properly. It easily comes up and the red LED goes off.
The green part did not latch properly. Remove cartridge and insert again. When inserting hold down the cartridge while pushing the green part downwards.
The cartridge is leaking when removing the sealing foil.
Open the cartridge with the ink-outlet upwards. Hold the cartridge at the front and back side, but never place your fingers at the side walls. Remove the foil slowly and without squeezing the plastic body.

In my printer there is place for 6 cartridges: black, black photo, cyan, magenta, yellow and also a grey cartridge. However I cannot find alternative black photo or grey cartridges.
It is possible to continue to print with the empty photo black or/and grey cartridge(s) in the printer if you validate the different messages.
